Wisdom teeth are third molars that begin to erupt between the age of 17 to 25. In most of us, there are four of them, one on each corner of our jaws. Wisdom teeth may naturally come through into good alignment with other teeth or they may erupt at an angle unfavourable for function.
When wisdom teeth are impacted they don’t have enough room to emerge or develop normally and this is usually a cause for concern because of potential food trap, decay and infection. In fact, impacted wisdom teeth are a common cause of dental infection among adolescents and young adults.
Most cases of impacted wisdom teeth require surgical extraction techniques for successful removal. You may choose to have your wisdom teeth removed under local anaesthesia or in a hospital setting under general anaesthesia, depending on your overall health and budgets.
